Virtual Archive Information Package

1 Definition

A ‘Virtual’ AIP (vAIP) is an NCEI specific realization of the Open Archival Information System Reference Model (OAIS RM) concept of the Archival Information Package (AIP).

Notes

vAIP may refer to the implementation, concept, or defined process that encapsulates their creation and management. vAIPs were created to provide a fundamental unit of abstraction for data held in Archive to guarantee Independent Understandability of Archive holdings for various Designated Communities to meet a goal of Long Term Preservation. Long Term Preservation implies that Archive holdings must be independent of specific technological implementations and catalog views of their contents, allowing for evolutionary and flexible growth in an unpredictable future.
